Follow up questions nobody cares about.

1. Did WALL-E borrow from other sci-fi?
A1. Yes.
2. Does it impact the credibility of WALL-E?
A2. No.
3. Why?
A3. Anyone creating sci-fi borrows from other sci-fi material or even non-sci-fi material. Often they are creating new worlds, universes, and scenarios that would be boring if you had to explain every detail. Some themes are just an accepted part of sci-fi and offer familiarity to the reader/watcher without having to tack on a 27,000 word prologue. Often times the sci-fi creator is unaware that they are even borrowing an idea. The idea is just that universal or just that good.
4. Can you give an example from WALL-E?
A4. Yes. After hundreds of years in space humans have become so dependant on verbal communication w/ machines that they have forgotten how to read. This is hardly a new idea. Colony by Robert Grant used this same premise to similar humorous effect. Robert Grant wasn't the first one, either. Douglas Adams touched on the idea in one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books, albeit within Arthur Dent's single lifetime while stranded and living alone in a cave. Douglas Adams wasn't the first either. Walter M. Miller had a similar theme as the underlying premise for A Canticle For Liebowitz, though in that case it wasn't dependance on machine but the destruction of modern civilaization in nuclear holocaust that was the cause.

well i like the one writer you mentioned that i know,LOL, Douglas adams(i say like although i have only SEEN the BBC TV series of 'hitchikers'..and that was a long time ago)

but i prefer Philip K dick..i have a big volume book(5 novels in one kinda thing) and although they are quite hard to read and get into..for me anyway, his ideas really make you do a Keanu and go 'woah'.

The usual
'do robots have feelings'..or

'if he hadnt seen the future would he of gone onto that path in his life' etc

has prolly been copied a million times...but thinking like that i would be suprised as well that Philip K dick was the first,as he is(was)quite a modern writer

i havent seen WALL-E but i have seen the trailer on the PSN store..looks okay.haha

did you ever play Mass Effect Whacks?,that pretty much copies of everything Sci-Fi but still feels original

anyway, who was it who said 'if you are gonna steal, steal from the best'

scott, definately worth seeing. not exactly the greatest entertainment for adults ever but plenty entertaining for kids and good enough to keep adults from getting bored. quite good, actually.

metal, don't know the quote. both mezzo and i played mass effect but i never made it through a second replaying. other games came out that distracted me. i keep meaning to go back to it but hell... i haven't finished oblivion yet. 215 hours or so into oblivion and i've barely even touched the main questline. been hunting slaughterfish and bears and trying to make my own weapons and armor (have a sword called the retro-encabulator.... it's f-ing brilliant). i also like philip k. dick but he's very serious. my favorite sci-fi is that which comes with a healthy dose of humor. you have heard of robert grant, though you may not realize it. he is bob grant of red dwarf fame. i do recommend a canticle for liebowitz. it's one of my favorite sci-fi reads and just recently i've gotten into jerry pournelle (thanks to leo laporte having him on TWiT a few times).

Bob grant, yeah i should of caught on definetly as my middle name is Robert and my dads name is robert/bob,LOL...i knew Doug Naylor had done a few things, but not Bob Grant..i knew Bob grant had left red dwarf at the end of series 6,he didnt co-write 7 or 8...can you tell?,LOL

'philip K dick(philip J fry?,LOL)..is very serious',is a pretty good desription of his work,and describes it a lot better than i did

215 hrs in Oblivion??...holy cow,i think i took 111 hrs to finish it all and thats included all the add ons....great game though

oh BTW whacks/'mezzo..i have just got hold of the second futurama movie(the beats with a billion backs)...yet to watch it though

it is the second one right?..the first being benders big score?..its just that i watched the first minute or so,and it said 'previously on Futurama'..and it was a scene i didnt recognise...perhaps actually watching the film will bring light to the situation..but i dont want to watch it if it is the third, and not the second

Hey Metal,

Yup the beast with a billion backs is the second movie. To refresh your memory, it starts with the rip in space caused when all the time benders got together in the end of the first movie. Watch it, It's great!

I like beast with a billion backs more than bender's big score. Not that I don't like bender's big score. I just thinkg bwabb is better. genticles ftw! (for the win not fuck the world). I think it's time to kill the captcha. lots of others don't use and don't seem to have a problem with comment spam. I hate putting in the stupid captcha. keeps me from commenting half the time.

couldn't remember the Benders ripping the space..but i watched the new one anyway(would i really of been able to resist?)

loved every minute...i think Zapp with the Hose on Amy,near the beginning made me laugh the most..typical Zapp,i love that guy

so,are we just waiting for one more futurama movie now?..and then thats it?

i personally would like to see a 5th season....still not sure why they brought back family guy, sure if it didnt have peter Griffin...as Brian and Stewie steal the show ..but i hate peter

and anyway,my point being that Futurama is 10x better,IMO

well intelligent people probably do like futurama better. the ratio of smart:fart jokes in futurama is something like 70:30. In family guy it's more like 30:70. i agree with you on zapp with the hose. a standout moment in the film. zapp is actually why i think i like this one better. anything with more zapp brannigan is more better. there are two more dvd movies coming. not just one. there may be more after that. i'd be ok with more dvd movies instead of the show returning to tv with new episodes. w/ dvds they can do whatever they want.

I actually heard that Fox was using the data compiled from Amazon sales of the DVD's to determine whether to proceed with any "future" projects involving futurama. ;)

hopefully it will be enough...and yeah i wouldnt mind them sticking to films..or both :)

just thought you may like to know(incase you dont know that is)

that there are more and more rumours apearing about star wars battlefront 3..some even saying it will be officially revealed next week at E3(i love this time of year with E3 on the XBL marketplace)

apparently its free radical who are doing it(timesplitters,Haze)..hopefully it wont have cartooney graphics like TS..and will be better than Haze(the demo was pants anyway)

march 2009 could be the magic time,if true i am taking the month off work
