GAIM is now Pidgin
Ever since I first heard about Trillian from Leo Laporte many a year ago I've completely dismissed instant messaging programs such as Y!IM and AIM. Everyone I know is on a different messenging system. It sucked having 4 or more programs running just to communicate with people. Programs like GAIM and Trillian allow you to use multiple flavors of instant messenger within one program. I have MSN, Yahoo, AIM, and Google Talk all going in one neat and trim little window. Trillian was my standard for a long time but one day I was wrestling with a bug and a co-worker (IAMCHOCHO) recommended GAIM. I never went back to Trillian. Trillian has released a new version that's supposedly pretty pimp but I don't like bells and whistles on shit. I like things sleek, compact, and efficient like a VW Carmengia. This concept has gotten better and better. There's no reason for you to muck about with different instant messengers or try to talk your friends in to switching so you don't have to run two or more at the same time. Try Trillian, if you must, but if you want the good stuff go GAIM.
Actually.. you can't. GAIM is gone. The name has been changed to Pidgin. I installed it last night on my desktop. It's pretty much the same as GAIM but it does have some refinements and reviews on this newest release are good. Not too many bugs or anything like that. Some companies (MSN, Yahoo, AOL) don't like these programs because they circumvent their ad and content delivery systems. Other companies (Google) have embraced them and even have instructions on how to configure them in their FAQs.
It's time! If want a to use and instant messenger that's about instant messaging and NOT about taking up half your screen with ads, lame ass avatars, online music stream access, or cutesy crap then you need to book your ass over to www.pidgin.im and get you some satisfaction!
