Quagmire...The New Zapp
Whackly and I were discussing this very point last night. In every show it seems there is one character that seems to stand out more than any of the others. In the Simpsons (during the good years), it was Homer J....on Futurama, it was the Zapp Brannigan, and now on Family Guy I think the award has to go to Glen Quagmire.
All three of these animated characters are funny in their own ways...Homer was funny in a "stupid" kind of way, Zapp was funny in a "desperate" kind of way, and Quagmire is funny in that "creepy" kind of way. In Family Guy's first run , Quagmire was more of an aside ...kind of like parsley, but now it seems he's working his way into television funny-dom every week. While he doesn't top Zapp in hilarity (who ever will?), he keeps me tuning in that show week in and week out.

hmm,good point ezmezzo,never got round to watching family gut though
with the simpsons that show has something very few other shows have,and thats nearly every character is a stand out for me,and then it has another layer of lesser known stand outs...like bumble bee man...or that sea captain that i dont know the name of

futurama is good at getting this formular as well(okay,not just 'cos its the same makers)
zapp brannigan,and kif....crazy eddie the car salesman...scruffy the janitor
now if you tell me that family guy has got the same type of unique characters,like simpsons and futurama...then i think i might give it a go
Sadly enough..Family Guy has a couple of good ones, but not as in depth as Groening's characters. My favorites are Stewie Griffin, Quagmire, and Peter...although Peter is pretty much a rip off of Homer.
The show itself is entertaining,and i'm glad they brought it back to Fox...I just wish they would do the same for Futurama. But, don't expect the same caliber humor as Futurama...sadly, it's an imitation, but not the original...
why do fox have all the best animated shows?....do they have south park as well?
Nope, Southpark is a show on Comedy Central. I'm not sure why either...efforts on the other networks tend to flop, like last year's King of the Pride which was made by the guys that did Shrek...lasted all of about 3 episodes...
I think Zapp Brannigan is the all time best animated character. Everything that he says is funny and it's the delivery of the lines (not just the content) that makes him so funny.
Quagmire is funny but is a little too creepy for me for some reason. I think Stewie is the stand out for me on Family Guy.
Sadly, the Simpsons has gone way down hill but in it's prime the best characters were Jessica Lovejoy, Gil the salesman, Ralph Wiggum, and of course Homer J.

with the simpsons i dont usually watch them on tv,as i am just waiting for the seasons on dvd(which is slow going,we had season5 a couple of months ago)

Gill is great but you'd have to be on crack to think he's better than Linel Hutz and Troy McClure. Not to mention the captial city goofball and bumblebee man.... and Willy! Ya Puritan Pukes!
I agree Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure were the greatest...too bad Phil Hartman was killed by his goofball wife...Gil was his replacement. Gil is funny though...
And.... also... there are some other subtleties to be discussed here... like would zap be as funny without Kif? Would quagmire be funnier with a sidekick?
